REQUIREMENTS FOR DEACON SERVICE

DEACON NOMINATION PROCEDURE

READ THE REQUIREMENTS

Confess to be a born-again Christian with a personal knowledge of Jesus as Lord and Savior, and living a life controlled by the Holy Spirit.

Read and accept the Scriptural basis for deacons as prescribed in 1 Timothy 3:8-12. “Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested, and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.”

Support by faith and action both the adopted Lakeview Baptist Church Covenant and the Baptist Faith and Message (2000).

Be age 25 or older, and if married, the husband of one wife.

Commit to the tithe through the Church program of stewardship.

Support by prayer and participation the entire church ministry, particularly Sunday School, Sunday worship services, mid-week services, and other ministries of God’s work insofar as able in good faith and conscience.

Assume without reservation the responsibilities, obligations, and opportunities expected of a deacon-in- service. Deacons are servants who lead and leaders who serve. The deacons shall join the pastor in providing spiritual oversight of the church. Together with the pastor they shall seek to know the will of God for the church and lead the congregation to do God’s will. In this they shall be guided by the state of purpose adopted by the church. The deacons shall meet with the pastor and ministerial staff on a regular basis for Bible study, prayer, fellowship, and to deal with matters pertaining to responsibilities of the deacons.

Shall have been a member of Lakeview Baptist Church for at least one year prior to the time of nomination for election as deacon-in-service.

READ ABOUT NOMINATING

Any church member may make recommendations to the Deacon Nomination Committee. Recommendations should be made in writing prior to October 1. Nominees are selected by the Deacon Nomination Committee.

The Deacon Nomination Committee shall be composed of the pastor, the chairman of deacons, the vice-chairman of deacons, and a fourth member to be selected by the chairman of deacons from the deacons- in-service.

The Deacon Nomination Committee will uniformly examine the qualifications of individuals recommended for deacon-in-service against the above stated standards and will present a list of nominees for election.

Generally, two individuals will be nominated for each vacant position to be filled either for a regular rotation vacancy or an unexpired term. The Deacon Nomination Committee will make final determination on the number of nominees based on the number of qualified candidates available.

Recommendations of men for consideration by the Deacons Nomination Committee are to be submitted in writing to the church office, or to the Chairman of Deacons. It is suggested that recommendations be submitted in a sealed envelope with “Deacon Recommendation” written on the outside of the envelope. Recommendations of the Deacon Nomination Committee will be confidential.
