Romans 8:26–27

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. – Romans 8:26–27

As we saw yesterday, when we believe we are sealed with the Holy Spirit who is the guarantee of our inheritance (Eph 1:13-14). What a gift to know that the Spirit is our confidence for our future. But the Spirit has not been given to us just for the future but also right now!

In Romans 8:26-27, God reminds us that the Spirit helps us pray. We are all weak. All we bring to the table is weakness, even in our prayers. We often do not know what or how to pray. Maybe we don’t know how to pray for a friend, a certain situation, or the future. But God says that the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. We can be confident that when we pray, the Spirit is helping us pray.

Why is this good news? Because the next verse tells us that God sees and knows all things. He knows our, minds, and desires. Knowing these things, He prays for God’s will to be done.

Here is something that is so cool. We see later in the chapter that we have Jesus seated at the right hand of the Father interceding for the saints also (Rom 8:34). We have the Son and the Spirit praying on our behalf when we pray. We have double intercessors praying for us when we pray. WOW. So what does this mean for the believer? It means that we can have great confidence when we pray that God hears our prays and desires to answer them according to His will!

This is a great benefit every believer has as God’s children. What are other gifts you can think of that God has given His children through the Spirit?

So now let’s ask three important questions about Romans 8:26-27.

What do these verses tell me about God?

What do these verses tell me about myself?

In light of reading these verses, how should I respond?

Prayer Points:

  • Thank God for giving the Spirit as our Helper and Intercessor!
  • Pray that God might transform your heart and will to be what His will is.
  • Ask God to show you more ways you might pray boldly knowing that God hears your prayers!
